But if you ask me what the truth of his life was — and the truth of his public life — I would have to tell you it's hate. Coates: Just in terms of bridging gaps and everything, I have a basic level of respect that I accord to everybody. I want to say what I have to say. I don't want to shrink back from it. But I do think, on a basic level, there's a respect that has to be had for people with whom I disagree. At the same time, I recognize that part of my audience - and I would say an important part of my audience — is people who have never enjoyed that respect. People who, in fact, are subjects of the kind of hate that Charlie Kirk was harvesting. Because there are real consequences. So, when I read his words toward trans people - Jesus. Coates: What immediately strikes me is if you take the reproductive rights example — which I know it's not necessarily the example that you would hold out. But I think the problem with musing about that is: Abandoning it is a very real possibility for people who don't have the option to fly to another state or do X, Y and Z. So I suspect when they hear somebody of your status, even if it's not the example you mean, putting it out in the air, they feel - and it's not just that you're putting it out in the air. You're putting it out in the air and then saying: I don't necessarily even mean that one. But if you're going to say that, I think you really have to put the data behind it. I think that's really important. Coates: I guess what I want from you is I want you to take as seriously people who are in the tent and who are vulnerable and afraid. And if you have to convince them of something that's extremely, extremely uncomfortable, or tell them that you're taking a position that is extremely uncomfortable, I just think you owe them a little more. That's all I'm saying, man
