I was glad to have an opportunity yesterday to discuss Minnesota’s implementation of its extreme risk protection order process at the National Alliance on Mental Illness’s state conference yesterday, and its role in keeping Minnesotans safe during periods of crisis.

I'm happy to be heading to OKC to present at the Midwest Clinical Conference with my colleague JaneAnne Murray about representing and working with survivors. (And also to see the Indigo Girls.)

I tell my students they need to fit in self-care time because our work is a marathon. OrangeTheory is my self care and I improved my 12 minute benchmark this week. I still have many bad runs because it’s running and I’m me but it’s still nice to see progress.

The Clinic won a case in Mille Lacs County this week where the Court held the Second Amendment does not protect brass knuckles. Building on language in the Clinic's COA win in Gaal, the court adopted our proposed approach to determine what arms are protected under 2A and upheld MN's ban.

My summer student directors Solomon Park (‘26) and Lola Brown (‘25) appeared in Anoka County today in our case defending Minnesota’s prohibition on machine guns, and Defendant withdrew his 2A challenge. The GVP Clinic interventions team wrote a great brief before the end of the school year.

MN friends, join me at tomorrow’s vigil in memory of Melissa and Mark. No signs will be permitted. Please bring a candle.

I don’t have a lot of words right now, but offer humble thanks to Speaker Hortman for her service and leadership. Love to Sen. Hoffman and both of their families, and to our other legislators. We will keep fighting to prevent gun violence and hate.

Gorgeous Minnesota spring day to support the Next Step intervention program at HCMC. A person who experiences a violent injury has a 45% chance of another, but only 3% of participants in Next Step have experienced another violent injury. nextstep-walkathon.funraise.org

The GVP Clinic successfully defended the law prohibiting guns without serial numbers in Washington County, for a hat trick of wins in a busy week. Student Directors Arielle Hugel ('25) and Will Roberts ('25) and Student Attorney Callan Showers ('25) handled the briefing and court appearances.

The second GVP Clinic win this week includes a successful defense of MN's permit to carry law in Ramsey County. GVP Clinic Student Attorney Anthony Benz ('25) led the case, with the court ruling that MN's shall-issue licensing scheme is consistent with Bruen & the nation's history and tradition.

It has been very meaningful for our Minnesota Law students to see how they directly influenced the outcome of the case. Arguments Meghan made in oral argument appeared in the opinion and the Court followed the path the students laid in the briefing. Watch for an appeal to the MN Supreme Court.

The State won the first Minnesota precedential 2A challenge since Bruen last week. GVP Student Director Meghan Zula ('25) argued the case at the Court of Appeals and wrote the brief with Student Director Melissa Hartley ('26). The COA upheld MN's felon-in-possession law and serial number requirement

Moving and thoughtful ceremony, honoring Judge Laura Provinzino, with many mentions of the rule of law and Judge Murphy. Congratulations to Judge Provinzino!

Aidan Vogelson (‘25) led the GVP Clinic’s work securing a Dakota Cnty court opinion this week upholding MN’s permit to carry law. Aidan put together a brief in 3 days replying to defense’s objection to the AG’s intervention, and then a merits brief in one week, winning both. Really impressive work.

More GVP Clinic student winning streaks. Savannah Klein and Meghan Zula on the leaderboard for the Minnesota Justice Foundation’s NCAA pool. We’re coming for you, Jack Whiteley.
March 28, 2025 at 2:46 AM
GVP Clinic student Jaxon Alston (‘26) appeared in Anoka County yesterday in our case defending Minnesota’s law prohibiting machineguns against a Second Amendment challenge. All of our interventions team and the vast majority of the clinic has gotten stand up court time this year.

It has been wonderful being at the Junior Scholars Conference hosted by Northeastern and coordinated by @davidasimon.bsky.social. I got very helpful feedback about my work in progress about Second Amendment challenges to 922(g)(8)(C)(ii). Great convos and panels about being a junior scholar too.

GVP Clinic Student Director Meghan Zula argued today in the MN Court of Appeals, in the first precedential MN state court case on gun laws since Bruen. She defended the MN felon prohibitor, permit to carry law, and prohibition on obliterated serial numbers. Melissa Hartley helped draft the brief.
