Sitting in a journalism conference on AI. Was hoping to hear critical evaluation (yknow, journalistic enquiry) of AI. Instead, I'm listening to a 'professor' of journalism justify how he used ChatGPT to write an article in the journal Nature due to English being his second language. We are cooked.

POV: You are an editor who has to do a search-all of ". " because there are still people who double-space after a full stop as if they are living in the typewriter era. Do you hear me? If you are doing double spaces after a full stop, you are living in the 1950s. GET IN THE SEA.

Got my overseas ballot for local elections in New Mexico. I take my voting rights seriously & research each candidate, even the school board & flood control authority. Also a reminder you have a vote on how your government spends money on bonds (eg socialist stuff like schools, libraries and roads).

A truly unmatched life moment: my first book galleys (uncorrected proofs) through the letterbox. Ironically, these are the US version, which comes out after the UK version. Still a thrill to hold them!

Can AI be part of ethical journalism? I'm still not sure. But looking forward to the European Journalism Centre's Impact Summit in Warsaw next month on the theme of AI in journalism. 💻 The programme includes a panel on the ethics of using AI in reporting. Let me know if you'll be there, too.
