Elgin was also home to an infamous prison-hospital where many people with disabilities were medically incarcerated. Complex town, difficult history, good on him ♥️

Oh man! That’s a dinner I’d love to crash!

Great article and super important topic! But people should also know that the third party system is rigged, particularly in some areas (pain treatment being a big one): ceur-ws.org/Vol-2657/pap...

Can you say more about that? His emails? Either post or DM? I’m wondering if what is being called periodic paralysis is the same/related to/different from adult onset (dopa responsive) dystonia, a name patients have basically invented but some neurologists are adopting, esp outside big hospitals.

Can’t wait for more info!

Omg, right? You couldn’t make this up if you tried. And meanwhile, as many have pointed out, he brings his wife to every meeting presumably so she can explain stuff to him.

Oliver Sacks even reports using it in the cases of encephalitis lethargica reported originally in “Awakenings” in the late 60s. (Tantalizing for ME research). I wrote a thing about it I can send you if you’re interested. (I’m a medical anthropologist).

One clue is that it has been part of recommended ER care for idiopathic dystonia and tardive dyskinesia for a very long time.

It gives me double vision and makes me so absolutely whacked out that I’d argue it’s diagnostic.

Right? I have so much to say about this. Maybe in DMs? It’s complicated but I’m right in the exact septad territory you’re mapping.

I made some comments and took them down because I was getting into the weeds and honestly it wasn’t the point. Fair enough about this study, though there’s more to be said, including mentioning people like me whose health depends on the unintended anticholinergic side effects of Bnryl. Rare but real

Sure, but J&J still do own minority share in Kenvue. The post I was responding to was more about the political donation trail of J&J and perceived slights by the first admin. I think the question about why they’re after these household brands may still have related answers. But maybe not.

Yes, I think this is important. Trump and RFK Jr tangled with them around Covid vax, too, during first train wreck admin. Also of note: There’s been a recent push against Benadryl (also household brand, also J&J), this one from “within” medicine, but one that I’d love to see a journalist explore.

I’m a multiply disabled prof, so I work through access issues with the students as we go, and also explain why this crip riot grrrl approach is the form we need for the content of our critique (of, say, something like ableism) and the possibilities of our creativity.

This may differ depending on what institution you’re teaching in, but I know a few of us are turning to ‘zines - crafted in class, lots of forms of expression - and backing in that way. Helping them feel the righteous anger they deserve at having their education taken from them in old school style.

That was when I was at S-more, too, being a terrible poet with Barry Goldensohn.
