feeling a bit awkward posting this, but I first noticed this motif in a painting by Botticelli in the Uffizi. Not subtle even to my untrained eye.

I recently went to Hanoi, and this McDonalds near Hoam Kiem lake surrounded by little flags with red stars snd hammer and sickles broke what little understanding I had of how our world operates. (i did not sample the food).

As someone who grew up in the Apollo era, I always thought that science and innovation were the central pillars of my nation’s prosperity. I now realize that, due to fracking making us the largest producer of oil & gas, the US is now a petrostate with the attendant corruption & rent seeking.

As a teenager, I loved my PASP „black holes are out of sight“ T-shirt. My sister, though, successfully submitted this photo of us to awkward family photos where it will forever live frozen in time.

Because it is friday after a grueling week, here is the protostar HOPS 310 and its amazing jet as observed with Hubble in the infrared (1.6 microns only, minimal processing). It is blissfully unaware of everything taking place on a planet 1300 light years away, and i envy it for that reason. 🔭

Another personal highlight for the 20th anniversary of the launch of Spitzer. Infrared images taken in 2004 and 2016 of deeply embedded, young (Class 0) protostars show three undergoing luminous eruptions as they gulp down gas. All three discovered by #WomenInStem: see Safron+2016 and Zakri+2022. 🔭

Almost eight hundred well lit cyclist on the Ride Late in County 48 slow ride in Sylvania Ohio. It shows how many people will bike if they feel safe (the roads along the ride were cleared of car traffic during the event).
