In 1258, Gerald Fitzmaurice Fitzgerald, a son of the 2nd baron Offaly, invited the Franciscans to establish a friary at Clane. He (and not the 1st earl of Kildare, as claimed on their information board) was buried here. #History

According to the information board at Clane Friary (in co. Kildare, Ireland), the 4th baron Offaly (later known as the first earl of Kildare) was buried there in 1287. He died in 1316. That must have been disconcerting for him. #History

So, it looks like Musk is in charge now, and Trump has been relegated to being a geriatric Oompa-Loompa figure-head. The US is a train going off the tracks, hurtling down a cliff. #presidentmusk #falloftheUSA

I would go to this funeral.

A legend linked to St Elizabeth's Flood (1421) tells of a baby carried away by the flood with its crib and a cat. People spotted the baby after the floods receded. They noticed a cat leaping from one side of the crib to the other, helping it to maintain balance and keeping the sleeping baby safe.

A picture of Lyons Hill, Kildare, at sunset this day six years ago from Newcastle Lyons. Lyons manor was held by the Tyrel family in the 14th century. Gerald Tyrel was a close associate of the first earl of Kildare, and one of his sons Henry, an outlaw, was starved to death in Dublin Castle in 1306.

#onthisday On 17 November 1292 John de Balliol became King of Scots. Firmly under the thumb of King Edward I of England, Balliol's tenure as king was doomed to failure. He was deposed four years later. Scotland would have to wait another decade before another king took the throne: Robert the Bruce.

#onthisday On 17 November 887, Charles the Fat, the last Carolingian emperor of legitimate birth, was deposed, leading to the fragmentation of the empire. He died six weeks later. He was considered inept, but we don't know if he was fat, he acquired that moniker three centuries after his death.
