Currently the Yukon Ombudsman and Commissioner cannot investigate municipalities. Over the years, he has requested the same authority found in the majority of Canadian jurisdictions. One of these changes would include municipalities under his jurisdiction.

We concluded that the Department of Environment did not have the authority to withhold records about the Victoria Gold heap leach facility failure and recommended the records be released to the complainant. They are continuing to withhold 14 of the 33 pages.

Our busiest mandate in 2024 was the Information and Privacy Commissioner with 79% of our files with a 61% increase in ATIPPA files.

50% less files were opened with the Public Interest Disclosure Commissioner in 2024 than the year before.

Public entities are also required to report on disclosures each year and only one failed to report.

The recommendations in the Safer School Action Plan Assessment have been implemented by the Department of Education. The recommendations resulted from our formal investigation into the sexualized assault of a child at Hidden Valley Elementary School.

The court decision on our budgetary independence is out. The Judge dismissed our petition but agreed that our Acts are written to ensure our independence and suggested that the Legislative Assembly may want to consider these concerns to ensure our true independence. bit.ly/4le9l5b
