Is yellow paint a great solution? Hell no. It's decent at best. But it can be done well, doom 2016 has little green lights on pretty much every grabbable ledge. Once a dev pointed that out to me I saw it *everywhere* when I replayed the game.

Back in the PS2 and 360 era, breakable and movable objects cast shadows differently. Doors you couldn't open in HL2 had doorknobs that were part of the 2D texture. Every single breakable crate had the same model. There were a lot of subtle guides to whether something was interactable back then.
