yeah, that's what I was talking about with groundbound and groundpound, glad you remember more of it!

I often say that d20 is the worst die myself.

Right! Plus, there are also many cases where a system and the narrative around it make it seem like it's decent (3E fighters) when the system's mechanics make it weak. That's a failure of the system, and there's never an enjoyable epiphany moment when that's laid out to you.

Right, consider: people are not given a guide as to what mechanics are good or bad by the sourcebook. Additionally, the importance, and effectiveness, of _specific_ mechanics may heavily depend on the DM, campaign, and/or other players, as well as their experience.

I don't remember that, maybe I need to login again.

Like, one thing City of Heroes/Villains never did was 'flying combat' because only 1 of the 4 'super movement' options was flying. Superheroes having flying battles, no way! PvP was basically groundbound and groundpound.

GW2 is just, like, the most naive implementation of it and it's really okay!

It is worth noting that, in the same discord and channel, after discussion about the OBX decision was disallowed, the admins linked to a page that praised their handling of the incident.

Their policy of disallowing discussion, in practice, only applies to people who disagree with them.

Unfortunately for them, deleted messages can be preserved.

That an IFPA admin was allowed to link to the new summary, on the server after being told nobody's allowed to discuss it on the server, and people who say anything being timed out and erased, is also very upsetting.

I remember looking at a pack in a shop as a kid, and looking at singles in another. I remember playing in various places. I remember getting a 10 pack of Ice Age starters for a christmas, and a box of fallen empires that I sorted and spread on a full size billiard table my maternal step-grandpa had.

'but if my character can swing a sword, and the sword can go through the NPC, they have to be able to kill the NPC, I don't make the rules' the fuck you don't? if it doesn't add to your game in a way you think is interesting and fun and managable, don't fucking do it
November 15, 2025 at 8:14 PM
I think this 'doing things for the sake of doing them' framing is an important one. every thing you allow or disallow affects how your players can and will engage with it. you have to think about every mechanic you put in and its relationship to what the game is, nothing is truly a given!

So anyone thinking about this probably has to look at the Ultima games, b/c it became a Thing in Ultima to kill Lord British, to the point that a player found a way to kill the _invincible_ Lord British avatar in Ultima Online

Without that history, would that even have been tried?
