They were just tired from KO'ing a Star Destroyer at Scariff. Not sure what excuse the X-Wings had for doing just as poorly at Yavin.

Fun fact: The Iliad and the Odyssey actually take place on the Great Lakes. Also, it took Odysseus so long to get home because they didn't have cars back then.

So, after WWII, the B-17 saw continued use by the Air Force and Coast Guard as a SAR platform that could drop a lifeboat to folks in the water.
I'm just saying, whenever they do finally retire the B-52 as a bomber, it could drop so many lifeboats in a single carpet-lifeboating pass.
