For other viewers of Black Doves, I can tell you from personal experience that the DWP Christmas parties do not look like this.

I finished off a post I've had in my back pocket over the weekend talking about some of the rules of thumb I apply when working with infrastructure as code.

I’d love to say this doesn’t annoy me, but it really does….

“Login” and “log in” is another example.
I'm begging you, begging you to remember that
"signup" and "sign up" are different things
"catchup" and "catch up" are different things
"setup" and "set up" are different things

This is my favourite album I’ve listened to this year. Feels like properly timeless music

The longer Bluesky goes without competition, the sooner this decentralized social media experiment fails.

Seriously, don’t submit AI generated content for a job application. Use it as a tool to give you feedback or prepare for an interview, sure, but at this stage I’d rather have something poorly written than something with the niff of AI about it - at least you know what you’re dealing with.

Oh, is the Azure updates RSS feed finally working again? Blimey, that didn’t take long at all.

Just enjoyed reading the original PR/FAQ that kickstarted lambda and the litany of alternatives that followed.

AWS Lambda turns 10: A rare look at the doc that started it

Good timing.

I propose a slight change to the definition: to put everything on hold except Bsky'ing until you've had sufficient amounts of coffee.
Word of this morning is ‘procaffeinate’: to put everything on hold until you’ve had sufficient amounts of coffee.

A reminder to those working with Azure Blob: explicitly set a start time when generating SAS tokens for immediate use. This stops you from falling foul the default start time being 1s in the future. Ask me how I know.

AI (currently) can’t persevere with a problem or challenge. Or have a solution suddenly appear to them at 3am or in the shower.
In the age of AI, short form video and hot takes, the competitive advantage of the future is the ability to go deep, read the docs, build something new, learn hard things that take time.

It’s great having a space where, as a Brit, I’m not constantly bombarded with US voting propaganda. I know it’s a nuanced point, but Elon, I can’t actually vote…

I was watching an interview with DHH earlier and I totally agree with his take on AI-assisted programming. I enjoy the craft of writing code too much to go full self drive on dev work.

Something that’s limited my engagement with social platforms is an internal tendency that I’ve got to get every element of whatever I’m starting on nailed before I’m happy to dive in. Which all too often means I never get properly started.
