Not that it justifies ignorance, but New York state is a bigger economy than Spain. What happens in NYC perhaps impacts the rest of the world more than any other city. Trump was a product of the political economy of New York of the 1970s. New York has turned a page on this brand of neoliberalism.

But the difference is Allen emphasizes high wages, Mokyr, Aghion and Howitt focus on technology. This is a prize for the age of AI and tremendous hopes in technology as a solution to all problems.

Even if not directly acknowledged, I can't help thinking that the prize is also expressing economists' hope that technology (maybe AI) can revive stagnant economies in the West (US excepted).
