Balkan Affairs brings together seven young composers who explore personal and collective memories of the Balkan wars. Their insights—traumatic, nostalgic, and life-affirming—unfold in works for six vocalists and electronics, supported by video installations, interviews, and a multidisciplinary coda.

ABC der Ausrufe is a poetic comic video-poem by Vera Burlak, her son Kastuś, and filmmaker Monika Nuber, accompanied by an evocative electronic soundscape by Georgia Koumará. It is a tribute to imagination, freedom, and mindful attention.

Georgia Koumará's immersive sound design and Thomas Weiler's sensitive translation bring the work to life as a vivid, walk-in audiovisual experience – a poetic reflection on emotion, imagination and connection across generations.

Each of the 34 letters is turned into an emotional exclamation, becoming a story that unites Vera’s whimsical, enigmatic poems with Kastuś’ fantastical comic drawings. Monika Nuber’s animation,

about communication between the generations and about how emotions manifest themselves in them. It is about the value system–one’s own and the public one.

Stuttgart-based animation filmmaker Monika Nuber brings the comics to life in collaboration with Kastuś, while Georgia Koumará embeds the walk-in installation in a 40-minute sound narrative. The result is an impressive plea for imagination, freedom and mutual attention.

Together, they’ve found an emotional exclamation for each of the 34 letters and transformed these exclamations into 34 stories — featuring Kastuś’s fantastical comic drawings and Vera’s whimsical, funny, and enigmatic poems.
