The seminar concluded with a focus on balance. The use of AI in imaging should improve, not make, clinical practice more difficult. Technology delivers long-lasting value for both patients and clinicians when it is designed to assist care teams and easily fit into routine practice. #MSBMI #AI #TMC

One of the key challenges Oliver faces is the frequent occurrence of unplanned radiology outages. Their current system was architected approximately 22 years ago and experiences routine interruptions (at least monthly); disruptions delay radiologists' ability to read studies and impact patient care.

There are now 900 FDA-cleared imaging AI applications, but implementing them is not always simple. Keeping workflows consistent and supporting clinical teams is just as important as adopting the newest technology.

Oliver says consolidating diverse imaging systems into a single, unified enterprise-wide platform creates significant value by enhancing workflows and reducing operational redundancies.

From diagnostics to treatment planning, enterprise imaging plays a central role in healthcare operations. As the adoption of AI grows, organizations must ensure systems stay stable, secure, and scalable while introducing these new technologies.

The session wrapped with a clear message: building better AI means thinking carefully about who is included, and who might be left out. Epistemic justice gives us a way to think about fairness as we develop and apply these tools.

This talk isn’t just identifying risks, it’s also focused on mitigating harm. Dr. Bakken is discussing strategies for designing more equitable systems that recognize diverse lived experiences and support more inclusive innovation. #MSBMI #HealthEquity #UTHealth #TMC #AI

Generative AI, digital phenotyping, and machine learning algorithms carry the risk of perpetuating epistemic injustice. This especially when models are trained on data that excludes, flattens, or misrepresents certain populations. #MSBMI #DataEquity #UTHealth #TMC
November 5, 2025 at 6:35 PM
These ideas are well documented in healthcare literature, but the conversation is just beginning in AI and data science. Dr. Bakken is raising important questions about how algorithmic tools may reinforce structural inequities in how knowledge is valued and used. #MSBMI #AI #UTHealth

In 2007, Miranda Fricker defined epistemic injustice as harm done to someone in their capacity as a knower. This includes testimonial injustice (when someone’s word is undervalued due to bias) and hermeneutical injustice (when someone lacks access to shared resources to interpret their experience).

Security and patient confidentiality important to MGB. How they make sure they stay true is through some of the following:
- All patients are added with a HIPPA notification upon registration
- Any Non-Entity (Outside) data is removed
- All data is anonymized in their Qurery Tool

Dr. Murphy is here to highlight how thoughtfully designed infrastructure allows research and care to co-exist. By integrating data tools into routine workflows, institutions can reduce barriers, without disrupting patient care. #MSBMI #UTHealth #Informatics #Healthcare

A key milestone in this work was the creation of i2b2, a widely adopted, open-source tool that connects hospital data systems with the bioinformatics research community. i2b2 now has over 300 installations worldwide. #MSBMI #BiomedicalInformatics #UTHealth #TMC #Informatics
