WHERE’S MY TOP OF THE POPS

Went to see Stage/Fright at the Wyndham’s last week, it has less than a month left in its run and was so incredibly satisfying as an #insideno9 nut / horror fanatic. A bounty of spooky sketches and an excellent swan song for the series.

Don’t you *ever* go to London again.

Tonight, Ben Wheatley revealed that Reece Shearsmith’s tent scene was a total surprise; one take, no one knew how he’d play it. The reactions are real. My admiration for Shearsmith has deepened… as has my fear.

A FIELD IN ENGLAND is a monochromatic masterpiece that revels in psychedelia, isolation, and bromance (fight me on it). A stellar cast with Ben Wheatley’s visionary direction. Reece Shearsmith is absolutely mesmerising.

Our house has a “Breakfast Goblin” - an early morning entity who prepares fresh fruit and cereals for the kids, leaving without witness or trace before they get downstairs. Totally unrelated, my partner was ill in bed yesterday so the breakfast goblin was on holiday, and left us this postcard

Homemade pizza with salami Napoli. My pizza stone was £20 after my £10 one exploded after 10 years. The 100% inflation rate is still worth it 🍽️

Pagan Folk Horror captures the common man’s fear, often depicting women who defy norms and the horrors men inflict to restore “order.” Supernatural folk horrors, where dominant men become victims of forces beyond their control, offer a deeper thrill by subverting power and exposing vulnerability.

The witch trials epitomised misogyny, scapegoating women-especially those who defied norms, as witches. This revealed a broader historical tendency to pathologise female behaviour, reinforcing oppressive stereotypes and perpetuating systemic injustice towards women throughout history.

It’s important to reflect on the origins of folk horror as inherently misogynistic, often depicting women as victims, witches, or monstrous figures in rural, patriarchal settings. While I enjoy the paranormal allure, it probably affects my enjoyment of certain films within the subgenre.

HEREDITARY plays with séance, presenting the practice not as madness but as a rational turn in the narrative-both for the characters and the audience. In Aster’s universe, grief compels a search for meaning through perilous rituals, regardless of consequence. Toni Collette is untouchable.

A re watch of the VVITCH and I still don’t enjoy it the way I wish I did. I love that it grounds itself in true folklore of witchcraft where other folk horrors deign to dance, but the ending is too ambiguous and divisive, I wish it was more foreboding. ATJ plays Thomasin deliciously.

MEN puts Rory Kinnear to work as the shapeshifting antagonist in Alex Garland’s rural pagan horror with Jessie Buckley perfectly cast as the bereft townie looking for sanctuary in all the wrong places; exploring the uncomfortable truth about male predatory behaviour in its many forms.

A24 does Folk Horror - MIDSOMMAR nails the themes of grief, mind bending mycelium, Wicker Man mating rituals and impactful scenes of utter gore. Themes of grief intertwined with native / new blood sacrifice. Impossible to imagine without its predecessors but a standout in its own right

ONIBABA takes a sharp steer away from the British folk horror tropes, plunging instead into a claustrophobic war-torn Japan where human depravity and survival instincts collide. The horror here isn’t just supernatural; it’s deeply psychological, rooted in guilt, desire, and the masks we wear.

A surprising bop - STARVE ACRE - Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark re animate A M Hurley’s novel with vigour as bereft parents residing on farm ground with heretic (tree) roots. A true nod to Folk Horror - the finale can be sniffed out acres away, but the delivery surpasses expectations.

GWEN is an eerie descent into industrialism of Welsh mining towns, but never quite lands on a concept- or a Welsh accent. The slow burn builds tension without any payoff. Would love to see more Welsh filmmakers dabble with Folk Horror, but with more supernatural investment.

Top of the pops is WICKER MAN - the most cohesive storyline with the least amount of SA. Who needs morals when you have no apples? Two standouts are the pagan-infused soundtrack, and Christopher Lee flirting as a dapper cult leader that could sell you on anything - even sacrifice.
November 17, 2024 at 4:14 PM
Middle of the road is WITCHFINDER GENERAL - a folk horror no more supernatural than a tax return, a storyline about a serial Rpist and his brutalist Mutley, as bleak from beginning as it is to end. No witches featured. Men being awful in funny hats. One (1) bonus point for Vincent Price
