McKie's Disc Jockey Show Lounge

Started as updates from an artifact from a significant South Side club that has been spared the scrap heap. Now mostly other Woodlawn/Chgo history. Jazz & minutia. Infrequent posts.
Found it in a law book. Fire Oct. 1959, insurance adjustment issues caused to remain closed until he could rebuild and reopen there in 1964. An aside, he also owned Beefy 19 over on Western Ave.

The sidewalk weeds near the counter make me think it has been closed for a while at the point the '63 photo was taken

2) no car ports/service phones. And why is front end loader there? 3) missing figure - removed in advance? 4) sign on window in front appears to be the CoC demolition signs in all the other bldgs in the Parker collection where this appears to be from as well

I wonder if the original structure in the '63 photo was replaced with the one that's there now. Same dimensions/shape/details as orig. 1) '63 structure is very worn out. Note ext walls seem to be made of plywood vs cinder block currently. 2)...

Yep. That's how you get one who won't answer questions about their role in a giant ICE raid.

Foreground r-l: Don Byas (ts), then Jack Washington (bs), Earle Warren (as), Buddy Tate (ts), Helen Humes (voc), Walter Page (bass), and you can just make out Jo Jones's drum and Freddie Green's guitar. Looks like Vic Dickenson (tb) second from right. Oddly Lee did not get a photo of Basie! (2/2)

Yup. And they don't always have ID on, so the only way to really tell who it is is where they departed.

I tend to see them in tandem, one registered as CBP and the other no name. Looks like no-name might be CPD as it departed from the helo pad near Calumet Park

I realized that there's a food pantry open today and tomorrow at First Pres and wonder if they're gonna harass Rev. Black.

Here's what's weird (by modern standards): the bandstands of most places like this in Chicago (prob elsewhere too) had the band behind the bar, as in the bartenders would be below and in front of the stage and you'd face the bandstand if you were sitting on a stool.

There's a cool film of Steve Allen (who grew up two blocks from here) coming back for a visit in like '62, passing this spot, and not recognizing anything because it's all been flattened.

The piano and rhythm section behind Gray were the house band. Simmons and Sproles backed Parker on that last date here in Feb. 55. Dahlander got his start here but he was from Sweden.

55th St. & Harper Ave. Parker played his last Chicago gig there. It wasn't around very long, and by '60 everything was demolished for urban renewal; not even the streets are laid out the same way as they had been.

I am so glad I got to experience them during this time.
