Rewatched Self Reliance to see if it's really the better version of the Running Man that I remember.
It loses its focus in the third act, but its still charming as fuck throughout.

Another first, the Last Picture Show is Dazed and Confused if it was endlessly depressing and about the inevitable decline of the American empire.
It's real fucking good.

A first Thief (81) watch. It's intensely Michael Mann, and Caan is intensely watchable, but this is a deeply unlikable main character and I struggled through the last act I must confess.

Five Easy Pieces is maybe the most 70s movie ever made? Cynical, character driven, focused yet rambling, set in a specific locale, etc.
It's great. Revisit at once.

Frankenstein is an odd duck of a movie. It's predictably gorgeous, some dodgy cgi choices aside.
The Frankenstein section is pretty dull to sit through, and Victor is an unpleasant character to chill with, but the Monster's story is incredible. Elordi fucking kills it here.

The Running Man is a movie in pursuit of a tone.
It's got some real rage, but it also wants to be silly, and it also wants to be a pointed satire.
None of the action scenes really hit, its shot like a fake Netflix movie, and Glen Powell has too much whimsy to be this wrathful.

I hate the Sex Pistols, the worst kind of performative nonsense, no real punk ethos beyond the surface, and a completely constructed persona.
Couple of fun pop songs though. God Save the Queen etc

I mostly listen to hip hop for the beats, because I struggle to parse lyrics on first listen, and the beats here are too stripped back for my taste. Didn't grab me.

Deliver Me From Nowhere sucks.
Dramatically inert from start to finish, it just doesn't find a way to make Springsteen interesting and that's impressive.
Also, JAW needs to fire his agent, cus this is just Carmy again. He's willingly pigeonholing himself.

Showed my wife Now You See Me in prep for the 3rd coming out, and while it's mostly just super dumb fun, Dave Francos magician fight scene is legit great choreography and editing. Always love when an otherwise unremarkable movie has some greatness hidden in it.

Carry-On
Who the fuck do I need to see about the positive reviews of this horse shit?
Tedious, illogical, badly edited nonsense, and I hated it.

Finally saw Barbarian. Fuck me.
I've not had that much sheer dread in a movie in a while. The cat scratching in the other room didn't fucking help though, little asshole.
Good movie.

A fave childhood VHS, I've not seen The Frighteners in 20 years, and I'm delighted to report it's an masterpiece of pop filmmaking.
It's so deeply sad, yet so funny, ideal for MJF. The mystery is perfectly satisfying, if a little obvious.

My issues remain. It's a 5 star thriller, with a big swing ending that I deeply respect, but don't *feel*, and that undermines what comes before in my mind.
Yorgos remains the most excruciatingly talented fuck however.

I missed Ballad of a Small Player at LFF, and I'm kinda glad I did.
It looks and sounds wonderful, but the script honestly barely exists. This is a movie about nothing at all.
A shame.

Good Fortune is the smuggest movie I've seen in feckin time. Richies telling other rich people what we all already know as though it's a revelation, and patting themselves on the back.
Aziz is always terrible, but particularly here.
There's not a single joke.
Worst of the year.

OUATIH is still my favourite Tarantino. How did he manage to make me nostalgic for an era I didn't live through and have no real interest in?
It's got the most enjoyable ultra violence in cinema, because who doesn't love the brutalizing of literal baby killers?
His best soundtrack.

I missed The Killer when it came out, and it's so my shit it's crazy.
It's the best channeling of Fassbenders malevolent charisma outside of David the robit, and who doesn't love minute levels of process detailed at length?

Happy Gilmore 2 is better than it has any right to be.
Charming as shit when it focuses on the family, goofy as all hell when it focuses on the plot, and insufferable in its relentless self referential nonsense.
It's an admirable revival of 90s comedy nonsense.
