#MTTColumbiaRCA CD 14 Tchaikovsky’s Orchestral Suites 2 and 4. Oh these are marvellous performances, delivered with colour and panache by an orchestra on tremendous form. The strings are particularly incisive and characterful. MTT is a dab hand at this fare.

#MTTColumbiaRCA CD 13 Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony. There’s plenty of drama here, with the orchestra absolutely on its toes, communicating with urgency and splendour. MTT paces all of the movements very convincingly, building climaxes with a keen sense of timing.

#MTTColumbiaRCA CD 2 MTT directs the weird rock-opera Elephant Steps. All sorts of styles are covered here and text is downright strange. If you listen without worrying over the 1970s experimentation,‘you’ll find some interesting music. The rock song ‘Midnight Sun’ is marvellous.

#MTTColumbiaRCA CD 1 Well, we’re in the 1970s and this first album certainly feels that way. MTT and the LSO join the Mahavishnu Orchestra for ‘Apocalypse’. There are big, wild orchestral moments here, but it’s also flecked with rock music. It’s actually really enjoyable.
