With all due respect to history and historic records but it is highly unlikely for 99.9% of Americans to ever set foot in the white house - there are way more critical things being demolished such as education, science, democracy, our very government that would deserve a lot more attention …

The load-bearing myth at the heart of UK politics is that the politicians and media are tolerant and decent and working people are knuckle-dragging bigots, but it's actually completely the other way around.
A man on the streets of the UK is asked about the “problem of immigration” and dismantles talking points with ease.

The pursuit of knowledge needs to be independent and free of political influence otherwise it not knowledge it is propaganda - hopefully billionaires and philanthropists will meet the moment and ensure the pursuit of knowledge in the US remains somewhat independent of politics

Somehow influencers and maleficent politicians convinced the public that expertise is something bestowed on the privileged and not something quite democratic anybody can acquire through effort and countless hours of studying. Expertise is not wealth that can be inherited or passed on it is earned!!!

This--I am very grateful to all working hard under the most challenging conditions. NIH and NSF staff always are key to science but now more than ever.
Extra kudos and thanks to all the staff at NIH and NSF and other federal funding agencies for working extra hard in very small windows of opportunity to get grants reviewed and funds released before the attention-addled federal policies change again (on an hourly basis).

The whole purpose of having a federally funded National Institutes of Health is that NO COMPANY WILL EVER MAKE INVESTMENTS TO IMPROVE HUMAN HEALTH THAT DO NOT IMMEDIATELY RETURN BILLIONS IN PROFIT… the comparison of NIH with a company is a prime example of how unqualified this person is to lead OMB
trump is first and foremost a vehicle for delusional extremists — most of whom are total mediocrities — to impose their ideologies on the country, with vought as a paradigmatic example
TAPPER: 14 Republicans say you're risking undermining critical research by holding up NIH funding
VOUGHT: If they were a company, their stock price would in shambles. They in some respects caused the pandemic. You have an entire institute that does nothing more than DEI research at the NIH.

The U.S. holds the largest market share of prescription drugs in the world (53%). Over 95% of these drugs were developed with NIH support. Defnding the NIH at a time when China and others are heavily investing in discovery science will be bad for our economy and national security.

America is obliterating its scientific enterprise by underfunding the NIH and with it its national security, economy, jobs and nearly everything that makes America competitive, wealthy and safe - hard to imagine how annihilating cancer research makes anything (let alone our nation) great

My quote of the day
I think there are 3 things [important for leadership]. First, you have to have a big heart... The second is you have to have a spine, which means stand up for what you think and take the risks that you think are important. And third and least important is brains.

For every dollar invested in the NIH, $2.58 are generated in returns on the that investment (not to mention the improvement of our nation’s health)- defunding the NIH sounds like a terrible idea

NIH Director say journals "bully scientists into paying large fees".
No. Academia is a prestige economy in which scientific leadership chose to make journals the currency & Gold OA was deemed 'the way'. Publishers just cashed in; you don't have to pay $10K

NIH Plans to Cap Publisher Fees, Dilute “Scientific Elite”
Director of the National Institutes of Health says that capping research journals’ open-access fees will help rein in the $19 billion academic publishing industry and bolster scientific debate.

While the intent to reduce animal testing is noble the effort needs to be well planned and not botched as so many impulsive decisions - metastasis, the great killer happens when cancer spreads throughout a living body - it cannot be studied on a dish - metastasis does not happen on a dish.
