'Design by Making' is a favourite process of mine, which basically means I make it up as I go, but make notes and sketches so I can repeat the process in the future. I was asked by a collector of my work if I would consider expanding my (very small) repertoire of stuffed toys... how could I say no..

I revisited Heraklion Archaeological Museum a few days ago to see these fabulous clay pots with octopus decoration. Made by artisans from Bronze Age Crete about 3,500 years ago!

My photo collage shows four pottery vessels, creamy yellow in colour, with black painted octopus decoration, on display at Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Crete. Top left - Minoan wine storage jar with many handles decorated in the Minoan Marine Style, with octopuses, tritons, rocks, and coral. Height 55 cm. From Zakros. 1500-1450 BC Top right - flask decorated in Minoan Marine Style depicting an octopus with tentacles lined with suckers which writhe around the body of the vase. Other decorative motifs include sea urchins, seaweed and rocks. Height 27cm. From Palaikastro, 1500-1450 BC Bottom left - alabastron decorated in Marine Style with an octopus among rocks.
