A rando from old place, typos and atrocious syntax comes with the package.
Pinned
I don't know if I should pin post about my inability to write anything without typos, or that I'm rando and no one in their right mind should take them too seriously.
Well bye ✋

American and Soviet agreed to define what constitutes a test differently from how most would think (no. of test is not number of "devices" detonated) do we count Chinese test the same way?
One problem with testing "on an equal basis" with Russia and China is that they might not be on equal basis with each other. If we match Russia, China gets a free pass to follow. China has the smallest number of tests (45 v 🇷🇺715 and 🇺🇸1032) and ∴ the most to gain from new data.

A lot of talk about resumption of nuclear testing would erode America's lead (whatever that means) sounds like nuanced discussion in science of incinerating people.

There is a strangely symbiotic relationship between funding and prominence of nuclear policy NGOs, and nuclear testing.
I'm pretty sure their funding crisis would greatly relieved if Trump indeed goes ahead and start blowing these things (hopefully underground but you can never tell with this guy).
If you're a wealthy individual looking for a legacy, one of the craziest bargains to be had right now is saving an entire generation of American nuclear policy expertise by tossing some change at the nonprofits. The field is trying to hold together ~500 jobs max, and it can't last as things stand
We're getting nights like this basically monthly now, and the major funders of nuclear policy work are still retreating

It has been kind of amusing watching The Diplomat magazine tip toe it's way around Thai combodia clashes.
Mahathir's 100th birthday recived more coverage. Makes one wonder about editorial dynamics of the place.

Hi I'm alive, just cutting down on social media. I really do not care much about it ,especially this place.

Bluesky is repeating all of the old twitter things (except giving us option of turning off repost for individual accounts)
Over at old place people let us know how much they didn't care about blue checkmark of official endorsement by tweeting about it continuously for weeks when they were taken away
Verification should be simple case of your name and your face are what you claim to be, as long as we stick with this verifying someone should be routine and unremarkable.
When one starts to hand out verification to notable account, this whole process is essentially act of endorsement.

To make their algorithm supreme arbiter YouTube destroyed their search feature, but the thing is algorithm is pretty bad.
I'm now spending less time on YouTube than ever and I use to be a heavy user.

Is it just me or Brits have become more quiet over here.

It'll be fun to see Bluesky effect, if any, in next round of elections.
April 17, 2025 at 4:18 AM
Over at what once was Twitter, people share screenshots of Facebook and laugh about stupid people who still use that thing. Over here people share screenshots of Twitter and call every user a nazi. Over at Substack people share screenshots of Bluesky post and call it's users out of touch crackpots.

Hey remember Qatar Airways flight QR161, it descended at a pretty terrifying rate.
According to PR floof Qatar Airways put out "authorities were informed and we are carrying out internal investigation", it was due to pilot flying situational awareness.

There was a fear previously that this catagory would push producers down the road of ever more riskier stunts, just for the sake of prize.
Academy feels that would not be the case now.

I hope Iran is aware that military strikes would happen despite whatever Iran "negotiates".
Goal of US and Israel is regime change and they are single mindedly focused on that.
Any negotiation would buy time for few months only.

I don't know how much valence this would have, however this practice of using judiciary to stymie excutive is something Republican like very much.
So I thought they would not touch it.

Production has been declining for sometime. I used to wonder about that whenever I checked FAO's world cereal production stats.
Is rye the unloved grain?

Domesticated in Turkey ~6,600 BCE, it was seen as a weed in wheat crops in its native Middle East

It was only when it moved to northern Europe that it found a home; its ability to thrive in poor soils and drought has made it a notable crop there since at least 500 BCE

So what's happening in Mastodon now a these days?
Many old twitter regular have stuck with it, most have moved over to this place.
I deleted my account there because I wasn't really using the place, and didn't want to tax servers for free.

Toothfish in question is sold in US as Chilean sea bass. It is considered a luxury food even in normal time, so tarriffs hopefully won't effect their sales too much.
Overpriced fish aficionados are strange bunch.
Falklands toothfish caught in Trump’s tariff dragnet

The British overseas territory now faces a 42% levy — the 8th most punitive rate on US ‘worst offenders’ list

I spoke to Falklands govt rep about their surprise at move against their succulent, deep-sea fish export

Plethora of articles on Eurodeterrent is kind of becoming overwhelming.
Like space it out, deluge doesn't help, especially in today's fragmented social media environment.
My mind for whatever reason always reads Eurodeterrent as Eurodetergent.

So IF election ever do happen, what are Democrats planning to do with their majority.
Chances are, if election ever happen again, that Democrats would at least have majority enough for some minor changes in legislative practices.

In 2022 a fairly well known UN expert was citing Haiti as an example for Congolese people to follow, if they wanted to get rid of UN in their country.
It was during anti MONUSCO violence in that country.
