I thought it was 60 too but then someone said 67 and I double checked. No wonder we can never convict. Supposedly they had enough votes in the Senate in 1974 to convict Nixon, which is why he resigned. But that was back when the GOP actually cared about the rule of law and the Constitution.

It's 67. They had 57 votes in 2021 and still nowhere near enough. I think 60 should be the number but it's in the Constitution so can't be changed. (If we can't even convict in the Senate we certainly can't amend the Constitution).

It's not as simple as that. The stay is only for 48 hours to let the 1st Circuit have time to rule. Here's an explanation of why Justice Jackson made this decision.

Justice Jackson issued the stay for only 48 hours and as a result the 1st circuit has to issue their decision quickly. Once the 1st Circuit rules, SCOTUS will make the ultimate decision. Brown knew that if she rejected the stay she'd be overruled by the conservatives and it would be worse.

Oh, I remember it well. It was a big deal at the time. But a nuclear meltdown is still a scarier proposition and tends to stick in the mind more. And longer-term, the effects of the radiation released by the Chernobyl disaster could eventually cause even more deaths than Bhopal.
