Interestingly, the group of hostages seemingly form relationships with and show empathy and care for Sonny and Sal. The rapport that develops, and even understanding, willingness to call each other out and call each other in, demonstrates a power that we can cultivate when we come together. The ability to push back against the society that leaves people desperate on the margins. It’s the coming together to support each other that stands out to me half a century later. With fascism on the march, transphobia and queerphobia not just supported but matters of public policy, it’s the coming together, taking care of each other. The ending of the film proves that the comradery, the community, that we cultivate may not be able to stand up fully against the power of the State. However, as Leon states in the movie, “How do they expect you to get uncrazy when you’re asleep all the time?” We have to—we must—try. Not only for ourselves, but for each other.

sorry to be sharing my recent Lower Decks piece again but:
To be clear, I love Lower Decks. Sure, it doesn’t always work for me, but it does more often than not. This is in contrast to Discovery, whose final season I still haven’t seen yet at the time of this writing. However, I think for Star Trek to lead on and be true to its roots, it needs to at least start with an iteration of the format and then push us. For instance, Lower Decks nudges us by showing us the negative ramifications of AI, which is more than the currently running Strange New Worlds has done to resemble a morality tale or reflect our reality back to us. Lower Decks needs to be just the start, not the goal. We come together in community to push each other, to support each other to grow, like the lower deckers start to do. Not to sit around and go to the same party we’ve been at for 60 years, swapping stories of what was.
