These are all physical reasons why type-C is regarded as an excellent achievement!

…albeit until you realise that exactly the same looking type-C connectors can be rated very differently (hence v cheap ones produced that can’t handle the newer protocols/faster speeds)

USB-B also had another weird 3.0 adaption:

(It’s so it could provide more power, ie to run external spinning disks etc)

The different A and B connectors were designed to make sure you didn’t try to attach a host to a host or a device to a device… it was fool protection really.

After a while they managed to make the USB standard negotiate between the devices who was who rather than just relying on the cables…

Must remember that USB works primarily by one device hosting, the other receiving. The host can provide power to the receiving device - eg the computer, through USB, powers the mouse and makes it work. You don’t want something sending power somewhere that won’t accept it!

Type B was typically for client devices (ie A goes to the host like a computer etc and B would go to a functional thing like a printer, fax, other addressable devices)

My old electric piano had one!
