Never quite old enough to know better.
Great track. In turn, it sounds very much like James Brown's hit single Out of Sight.

Prince's original demo for Kiss which he gave to Mark Brown, the Revolution's bass player, sounds not a lot like this. He was acting as producer for Mazarati, and when Prince heard their demo, took the song back.

Maybe the CEO of Ofcom will apply the advice she was quick to offer the BBC:
'what frustrates me and others, is that when these things go wrong it can take a long time for the BBC to see that something's happened when everybody else was there within a matter of hours.'

There are many different Bluetooth codecs (see below). Generally speaking, Bluetooth is lossy (i.e. some audio information is discarded on conversion), so you are likely to get better audio from a wired connection.

Try both and decide what works best for you.

'Bilbo' was mastering engineer, Denis Blackham. He confirms here that, as you'd expect, it was a nickname he took from Lord Of The Rings:

Are you sure you are running the turntable into a suitable amplifier (either a socket marked 'phono' or a dedicated phono preamplifier)?

The tiny signal from a cartridge needs extra amplification and additionally the equalisation curve that is applied when a record is cut needs to be corrected.

A moving magnet cartridge has a rubber grommet as suspension, allowing the cantilever to move and then snap back. This will perish. But plenty of people run vintage cartridges regardless. A new stylus is a good idea, but it may not fix your problem. I'd work out what is causing your problem first.

Take a picture with your phone, zoomed in, to see if there is crud on the stylus. If so, clean the stylus (see below). If there's not a visible amount of crud on the stylus, your low output is an electrical continuity or amplification issue.

I doubt anyone can diagnose the problem from a video. Things to check:
Is there a stylus on the end of the cantilever? I.e. can you see it?
Is the stylus clean? A ball of dust/dirt will make sound retrieval impossible.
Is the tonearm cable plugged into an amplifier input marked 'phono'?
December 9, 2025 at 9:34 PM
Possible causes for low sound output are:
cartridge problem e.g. missing stylus,
tonearm wiring problem,
but most likely lack of/faulty phono pre-amp.

You may know this, but you can't just plug a turntable into a normal amplifier socket - the signal is too low.

What is a Phono Preamp and Why Do I Need It?
A phono preamp is an audio component that boosts the signal from your turntable to a level that allows you to connect it to your sound system.
