Feeling grateful for the landscape. @dangerwood.bsky.social got our first deer of the year and we’re trying to be more deliberate about connecting to the forest through our stomachs. Deer bone broth. Hickory nuts for banana bread. Muscadine grapes. Chicken of the woods. Beech nuts. Goldenrod tea.

Me and @dangerwood.bsky.social are scouting for remote public land in the Appalachian Mountains to hunt black bear. We’re experimenting with paddleboards for access and packing out. Hunting WNC without dogs is difficult post-Helene climate disaster, but it seems very rewarding.

Today @dangerwood.bsky.social talked about art’s ability to bring people into relationship with the landscape. I spoke about the nature writer’s role through history and the challenge of defining nature writing, when everything is ‘Nature’ . blueridgebartram.org/bartram250/

We are here! Sarah and I are both on panels to talk about the purpose and the practice of art, writing and natural history. Super excited to be in this place with so much biodiversity and beauty to mark William Bartram’s 250th anniversary of trekking across the southern Appalachians.

I’m inspired by Brent Martin’s poems in our last episode. Our mutual friend, John Lane introduced us. I went back to John’s poems and they are so good. John was on the podcast as well, here thecampfiresedge.com/2024/09/11/e... Love that we to get to combine poetry, paranormal experience and nature
