Checking out “The Professional Arranger Composer” by Russell Garcia this morning. His concept on “non-chordal” notes opens up a lot of beautiful voicings I have not used. Allow chordal notes to always be represented, but sometimes replaced by a half step below or one step above for color.

Getting back to the James Brown shed this morning and found this passage from an instructional book. It really articulates one of the things I find most foundational to rhythm section playing. A one chord jam is never boring if you make it feel great. Only gets better with time.

Great find today. NCCU “Super Trick” (1977)

Made by students attending Central in the late 70s under director Donald Byrd. This band and record helped bassist Aaron Mills get picked up by Cameo. Mills also went on to play with Ramsey Lewis, Charles Earland, Outcast, and many other artists.
