The manual take rate for Elantra was pretty good I thought? Not everyone will have the same standards for manuals, there’s plenty of people happy with that transmission, myself included. I mean people still even buy Jeep manuals, talk about an experience that should drive someone away but doesn’t 😂

It sounds like Gen Z also is having a growing appreciation and appetite for them, so there’s hope of a non-plummeting manual demand in the future. If we turn our noses up to the “okay” manuals and hurt take rates, that’s all the excuse the car companies are waiting for to drop them.

Maybe you only enjoy driving them when they’re really good, but to me I enjoy the extra engagement even if it’s not a top-notch manual. And we’re saving them in hopes of better manuals and more demand in the future. And I think companies like Porsche illustrate that manual demand can rebound.

I’m not too picky about manuals anymore, I’m just grateful to have them these days. If we turn our noses up to the lesser ones it doesn’t help the manual cause.

This article crucially leaves out the whole reason for the LC Hybrid. It’s about massive tax savings for the countries that tax by displacement. I don’t have sales figures but I’m sure sales were at least slightly better globally, and helps justify why they made it.

For EVs it’s cheaper, and it’s a good idea for cars that get crushed with depreciation in the first few years. If we would have bought our Mach-E I’d be way underwater on it right now. It went from a $50k car to $25k in 2 years. Also, I don’t like the risk of not having a warranty.
