They already have their product for sale, it’s called horticultural felt. It obviously doesn’t last as long as plastic since it’s biodegradable but she said it seems like they last at least two growing seasons and stand up reasonably well to weather conditions.

I'm working on an article looking at this topic for Small Farm Canada. The one possibility that's come up in my research so far is the Wool Grown Company from Ontario, who are looking at processing wool in a way to have it serve as an alternative. I'm going to interview the owner later this week.
