Facebook post: Matt Hodgkinson 5 Jul 2018 Six weeks ago, I changed my morning routine from getting the 7:40 train to the 7:10 due to rail chaos (https://www.facebook. com/matt.hodgkinson.75/posts/10156155133181071), when I realised I could get up 5 mins earlier and shower at work. I also realised I could jog the ~2km from King's Cross to my work (http://walkit.com/walk/?city=london&from=london+king%27s+cross&fuid=4 24175_512795&to=1+fitzroy+square&tuid=391296_456015&rta =old&direct=no2#nogo). With one week off for when we were in France, I now don't need to take my inhaler before, during or after the run, and today for the first time I didn't need to walk (other than waiting for traffic) to catch my breath.

University of Michigan Press, a medium-sized publisher of scholarly monographs and regional studies such as Amphibians and Reptiles of the Great Lakes Region (https://lnkd.in/gS69nebW) has embarked on an ambitious new project. Over the next 94 years, the Press will stop publishing award-winning books in the humanities and social sciences. It will instead devote all its efforts to republishing all the content on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp in print. "We initially thought of asking Meta if they minded us using their copyrighted content," said Charles Watkinson, director of the Press. "But there was someone on WhatsApp who said that it would probably take, like, 4 weeks for Meta to send us all their stuff in PDF format. Also we didn't know Meta's address so we thought it would be better to take the harvesting route." The Press is collaborating with Prestige Nail and Spa in Singapore to acquire the content. "My friend's claim seeks to apply a worn out law to a new reality. Books are different to other chattels (possessions) and the law should recognise this. Learned men like us, who have received a new heritage of knowledge through books, have an obligation to spread that knowledge, by copying and distributing those books far and wide. I haven't used up Finnian's book by copying it. He still has the original and that original is none the worse for my having copied it. Nor has it decreased in value because I made a transcript of it. The knowledge in books should be available to anybody who wants to read them and has the skills or is worthy to do so; and it is wrong to hide such knowledge away or to attempt to extinguish the divine things that books contain. It is wrong to attempt to prevent me or anyone else from copying it or reading it or making multiple copies to disperse throughout the land. In conclusion I submit that it was permissible for me to copy the book because, although I benefited from the hard work involved in the transcription, I gained no worldly profit from the process, I acted for the good of society in general and neither Finnian nor his book were harmed."

"Our Modern English word "true" comes from the same roots as "dru" (literally and figuratively) and has a fascinating story. The Old Anglo Saxon word "treow" meant both "tree" and "true" because pre-Christian pagans, believing an oak tree to be sacred, would literally touch an oak to swear an oath (in the same way a Roman would grab his right testicle to "testify," with the risk of losing it if caught in a lie). This act of touching a "treow" (or "touching wood") to swear an oath was expressed as a verb, as in "I treow it/I swear it." The "tree" part of the meaning was later lost, but not the literal words "tree/true.""
