Yes, the cashier on their feet full-time should be able to afford rent, groceries, and healthcare with their paycheck.

I can’t imagine any single good reason to hold the line in the Senate for the longest shutdown in history only to fold — WITHOUT DEMANDING CONCESSIONS. That just makes the entire effort look like sloth instead of a strategy to win the people a better deal. It’s practically a dereliction of duty.

I have a new fern, my first heart-leafed fern (Hemionitis arifolia) — and it has its first new fiddlehead since I got it! Amazing that they transform from fluffy and white to dark green with a black rachis. #fernfriday

“I had nothing for the front page. The next day, I resigned my position.”
As a former journalist myself, I found this essay about craft and work by Lisa Thornton @thorntonforreal.bsky.social so fascinating. Plus I love reading about writers’ jobs.

Craft: Word Count by Lisa Thornton
The challenge of flash fiction is, of course, to pick the right words to tell a complete story, since the writer is allowed so few.

I know I should probably play it cool but I can’t — I’ve had 10 acceptances this year. My best year ever (& I’ll be 51 soon). I’ve got 5 pieces forthcoming in 4 journals. I’m not ok. I’m bordering on great. And as a Scorpio I’m usually moody or meh. But wow. Today I’m happily agog. And so grateful 🌿

As I always tend to say after very good election results: yes! Yes! Now we have elected the people we want and the work continues: to hold them accountable every day and not let them abuse their power. And it all begins again in a year or two or three and onwards. Also: yay!

Cheney was the worst mix of Kissinger, Russell Vought & Stephen Miller, except he barely hid in the shadows, he was clearly President when Bush Jr was in office. He lied endlessly to keep the machines of war and fossil-fuel extraction grinding and churning out as much death and pollution as possible

Philly! Please vote tomorrow.
It’s one of those big ballots and many boxes are yes/no, not just GOP or DNC. Here are some links to help you navigate it. Very important to vote YES to retain all three PA Supreme Court judges, as shown below:

I re-read this fantastic book of flash fiction in October and realized it’s been 10 years since it was published. I also recalled hosting Helen for a reading from it ages ago at Tattooed Mom in Philly. Which is all to say —Happy 10-year Book Birthday to @helenmcclory.bsky.social 🎉

On top of today being an amazing celebration of candy excess and people wearing masks for joyous and scary non-fascist reasons, I cast my ballot by mail today and it felt very meh and normal, the way democracy should be.

I know the political news is, by GOP design, hitting people like a firehose each day. But on top of the shutdown, and the impending end of SNAP benefits, and ICE terror in our streets, the DOGE cuts are still happening too, just more quietly than before. Musk and DOGE should live in infamy.

I just read the words “A federal judge has cleared the way for a massive class action lawsuit against OpenAI to proceed” and it made me just smile smile smile.

Gone Lawn is one of those foundational lit mags that’s been around since before I started publishing & consistently puts out interesting work. If you can donate something to keep it viable, now’s the time.
Hate this sort of thing.
Dark times keep getting darker. If you like Gone Lawn and you have the means, consider a donation to keep us going, even something small. Thank you.

As June Jordan said, “We are not powerless. We are indispensable despite all atrocities of state and corporate policy to the contrary... At a minimum we have the power to stop cooperating with our enemies. We have the power to stop the courtesies and to let the feelings be real.”
