Also, advice for how authors can “protect themselves from a publisher’s collapse” would be appropriate if that publisher weren’t a profit share crowdfunder who had stolen those authors’ money.

Unbound didn’t collapse as much as it stole our money and then ran away.
A bunch of Unbound authors DID reach out in March to the Society of Authors when Unbound went into administration.

SoA said they didn’t help non-members—then after those authors paid to join said, “oh we can’t help with Unbound.”

So they are not in fact here to help, they just want attention
For authors, The Society of Authors is here to help. If you have been affected – or want advice on your next deal – do get in touch. Your rights matter, says Anna Ganley 👇 #BookSky

“Ooh, the crowdfunder failed! That means the old ways are still the best!” lmao get real Bookseller, it wasn’t the crowdfunding that caused Unbound to fail

And to clarify, the SoA didn’t help the authors in our group who were ALREADY SoA members and asked for assistance either—so obviously yes join your union early, but also make sure it IS an actual union who can fight for you (like the WGA in America) and not just a ladies’ tea party in disguise
