Ten years ago today, I reviewed “Spotlight” and not everyone agreed with me…. Think I’ll rewatch this incredible, inspiring movie tonight. To all the journalists out there, keep doing good work and explaining to people why it matters. ✊

In today’s paper: the first half of a monthslong project, featuring voices rarely heard in South Carolina or elsewhere.

The second half, also over two pages, runs Wednesday in our next edition. Grateful to work in local journalism and be able to foster conversations and thought like this. #scpol

Proudly voted today. It always gives me a great sense of civic duty, connectivity, community, and yes, pride — that our forebears created a system by which no matter where you live in the U.S., you can play a part in picking our leaders and thus you can lead yourself. (And also get a cool sticker.)

Recently (and wrongly) fired Indiana University director of student media Jim Rodenbush gets a standing O from hundreds of student and professional journalists at MediaFest25, the annual convention of SPJ, ACP and CMA. ✊

In view of the Capitol building, the line to get into a House office building for my first lobbying meeting today is long because of the shutdown. Appreciate the opportunity, though, so no wait is too long. Appreciate everyone’s support of local journalism. Appreciate yours.

Two A+ meals in D.C. so far, at Andy’s Pizza and Warka Coffee. Need the fuel to lobby Congress for the journalism industry this week. The fight for local journalism is a fight for local communities and for you. 🍕☕️🦾

What the column looked like in today’s papers. 🗞️
October 1, 2025 at 1:23 PM
Thanks to all the readers who have written me about today’s column, calling it “beautifully written,” “very good,” and “the best opinion piece I have read in a very long time.” Here’s what it looked like in print, which still matters to me.

Even if you think you know Marcus Lattimore from seeing him on the field or Instagram, you don't. Incredible football player. Career cut short by gruesome injury. Now poet with words like his runs that take your breath away. Grateful to have a job where I meet incredible people and write about them.

My first of two Marcus Lattimore columns this week ran in print today. If you need some real inspiration today, voila.

Amazing, I got an actual letter to the editor today, and it’s great. ✍️ 💯

How the column ends:

It’s impossible to know now whether this show of force will have a lasting impact on crime, but it’s easy to be appalled at the optics and aghast at the secrecy. This is not four dead in Ohio, but it sure feels like the slow death of open government.

How the column starts:

From today’s paper. My new column took up a full page in print, which still has an impact. 📰

tfw your column is the lead story on the news website, a rarity in opinion journalism and one worth memorializing!

Myrtle Beach has become the latest South Carolina city to adopt an early curfew for teens after several shootings on Ocean Boulevard. It may not address the problem.

I've long said high court rulings feature some of the best writing on the planet. I guess I should be saying universe. I mean, Vonnegut could've written this. It's Jackson's dissent.
June 27, 2025 at 8:37 PM
Jackson's dissent is no less ominous. "Grave jeopardy."
June 27, 2025 at 8:34 PM
Her dissent builds to this crescendo:

"With the stroke of a pen, the President has made a 'solemn mockery' of our Constitution. ... Rather than stand firm, the Court gives way. Because such complicity should know no place in our system of law, I dissent."
June 27, 2025 at 8:29 PM
This dissent today from Sotomayor is really something.

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson has a news conference tonight, and is expected to announce he is entering the governor's race. State Sen. Josh Kimbrell just sent out a news release announcing himself as a candidate in the governor's race. Next phase of that race starts today. #scpol

Opinion writers almost never make the front page so it’s an honor to see my column on the Emanuel 9 here. Glad the other editors thought this column warranted the Sunday cover today.

Big crowd gathered at the State House for Columbia’s #NoKings rally. People with signs standing shoulder to shoulder along Gervais Street from Assembly Street to Sumter Street.

The fault, dear Brutus….

At Allen University for a talk between Dr. Bobby Donaldson and author Kevin Sack about Mother Emanuel. If you’re in Columbia, it’s not too late to swing by. Set to start at 5:30.
