In today’s paper: the first half of a monthslong project, featuring voices rarely heard in South Carolina or elsewhere.

The second half, also over two pages, runs Wednesday in our next edition. Grateful to work in local journalism and be able to foster conversations and thought like this. #scpol

NEW | Two days ago, I published a deep exploration of the South Carolina prison system. Today, inmate Stephen Bryant decided he wants to be executed in South Carolina on Nov. 14 by firing squad. He would be the seventh person to be executed here since September 2024.

Proudly voted today. It always gives me a great sense of civic duty, connectivity, community, and yes, pride — that our forebears created a system by which no matter where you live in the U.S., you can play a part in picking our leaders and thus you can lead yourself. (And also get a cool sticker.)

I hope you spend some time with this today. Months in the making, a team working on the presentation. My new #scpol #scprison project.

🧵 We rolled out two more local election endorsements today, in mayoral races in Columbia and Myrtle Beach. #scpol

In all, we interviewed 30 candidates (of 32 I approached) in state and local races. We published those Q&As first, then followed with endorsements from our five-member editorial board.

In view of the Capitol building, the line to get into a House office building for my first lobbying meeting today is long because of the shutdown. Appreciate the opportunity, though, so no wait is too long. Appreciate everyone’s support of local journalism. Appreciate yours.
