Dogs have one advantage over cats as an editorial assistant and as a #StetPet: they can go outside for walkies! 😉

Today we check in with Effie, #StetPet editorial assistant of Halifax editor @choicewordsedit.bsky.social, who attended the virtual #EdsGuild2025 Red Pencil Conference.

"Conferences are wonderful but they can also be a lot, so I’m grateful to Effie for reminding me to take breaks when I need them!"

Here’s where I sometimes end up after a morning walk: Lake Washington, Medina.

It’s a typical Northwest fall morning—a lovely time for coffee and reflection.

I love this image.

I like to think my 3:40 am cat is waking me up to tell me he loves me, but I know it’s really about a treat! 🥰

Literary citizenship in action.
I was a writer-in-residence at Good Contrivance Farm this year, and it's one of the most generous and quality organizations I've worked with.

The moment #amwriting becomes #amediting. 😉
We're late sharing @ivacheung.com's November cartoon, but not because we were busy refining this post a thousand time before submitting it. Enjoy a laugh.

(And be sure to check out Iva's aside about her timely leftovers cookbook.)

Walking—and walking in Nature—expands divergent creativity….and isn’t creativity—bringing forth something from nothing—magic? 🪄

My cat Roo is honored to be this week’s #StetPet 🙏🏻!

The hashtag “StetPet” is a great hashtag for #writingcommunity building created by @edsguild.bsky.social.

“Stet” in Latin “Let it stand.” ie keep it as written.
Meet Roo, #StetPet editorial assistant of Seattle-area author and #EdsGuild Red Pencil attendee @matthewrehrl.bsky.social.

"I was looking forward to the #EdsGuild2025 Red Pencil Conference at the Lynnwood Event Center, but—sadly—my #StetPet Roo isn’t quite as fond of red pencils! 😉"

I don’t know if there’s a word in the dictionary to describe the level of excitement I have for my interview with @petersokolowski.bsky.social!! He’s such a delightful person and I loved getting to know him! Y’all are in for a treat!

Yes, “y’all” is in the dictionary and so is “fangirl.”

Vince Gilligan hates AI. To get the point across, he included the following note in the #Pluribus show credits: “This show was made by humans.”

“I hate AI. AI is the world’s most expensive and energy-intensive plagiarism machine,” said the creator and showrunner for #BreakingBad and #BetterCallSaul

Three things I took from Jane Friedman’s @janefriedman.com keynote talk at Red Pencil:

1. Em dashes are not the devil 😈 (or AI, if AI is the devil 😉).

2. Consider taking the middle way with AI

3. Writers/Editors with cats 🐈‍⬛ rock!

Whether writing or medical conferences, I always go with a written goal in mind.

At this years Red Pencil Conference (@edsguild.bsky.social
#EdsGuuld2025) my goal is to better understand the regional editing resources available to me as a writer!

A little #AI stuff’s OK too.
