The meaning of my new profile image:

“Not just a poetic metaphor but scientific fact: the carbon in our cells, the calcium in our bones, and even the gold in our rings were all forged in stars that exploded long before our solar system formed. We don’t just come from the stars. We ARE stardust.”
HR complains about applicants using AI for résumés, but recruiters already rely on AI to filter candidates. As Laney Hills-Mullen notes, it’s hypocrisy: “AI for me, not for thee.” Applicants are just playing by the same machine-driven rules.

Immunity and politics.

False balance in U.S. media hasn’t just warped politics.

It’s killed. After vaccines became widely available, Republican-leaning counties suffered hundreds of thousands more excess deaths. In Ohio and Florida, linked INDIVIDUAL records showed GOP voters died far more often than their DEM neighbors.

Drug arrests are down as Trump redirects law enforcement resources to his immigration crackdown.

It was delusional for anybody ever to have thought Trump cared about ordinary Americans; his political genius has been skill at channeling rage at those whom his base wrongly blames for their problems. Will the lies finally stop working?

I get uneasy when people trust me or distrust me without knowing my reasons. I don’t want blind faith or reflexive doubt—I want people to see how I got there. Maybe it’s the scientist in me, but understanding matters more than vibes.

As John Scalzi often says, the failure mode of 'clever' is 'a**hole' and a lot of clever people in Epstein’s orbit showed that in their private emails.

A NATIVE AMERICAN woman nearly got deported.

Yes, somebody who has even more right to be here than most of us.

I don’t know if Trump was directly involved in Epstein’s crimes. But he’s a documented sexual predator who spent years in Epstein’s orbit, and it’s hard to believe he knew nothing. His desperate efforts to block release of the Epstein files only make his denials look even less credible.

So far this Fall, wastewater counts for the virus that causes COVID are running below last year's level both nationally and in my town. Possibly this is partly because much of the US has had a warmer and sunnier Fall than usual, though nobody really knows.

1) Epstein wasn’t that old. My father, born 25 years before him, cautioned about email from … the beginning of email.

2) Some of these were written well after “but her emails” lost Clinton the race against Trump.

Zero excuses for him. Just an expectation of privilege.

When I read claims that real-time AI underwriting “lets us approve more people at the same loss rate,” I flash back to 2007. That was the subprime pitch too—until everyone realized the losses were only deferred.

Higher inflation has an important second-order effect on housing markets: it means people who have been paying a fixed-rate mortgage for a few years have had that fixed payment inflated away, making them more reluctant to move.
November 12, 2025 at 8:30 PM
Just saw a post claiming there should be a law making early mortgage payments go more toward principal. That’s already possible — it’s called a 15-year mortgage. Most people just can’t afford the higher payments.

If convincing evidence showed Trump knew about Epstein’s crimes, it could finally puncture the MAGA bubble. Many followers see him as the hero battling a supposed elite pedophile ring—despite courts already ruling him a rapist.

Sensational reports that rich Italians paid for “sniper safaris” in wartime Yugoslavia are under investigation. Still only allegations—but horrific if true. The BBC now has it on its main page, suggesting they’ve heard enough from trusted sources to believe there may be some substance to the story.

I’ve said before that using AI for research feels like being a TA with a bright but immature student — clever, full of half-digested info, but missing the big picture. That’s the new job: teach, guide, and debug the “second-year undergrad” in silicon.

I often post quotes from this website, but today's analysis of the shutdown endgame is (1) brilliant and (2) so consistently brilliant throughout that I cannot pick a shorter passage to quote.

Voters decided to reject experts' opinions, instead believing Trump's promise to stop Inflation, despite policy ideas that were unlikely to do that.

Now, a few of those who voted for Trump appear to have changed their minds.

I should have seen this coming, but I did not see this coming: MAHA loves the rightfully convicted crook whose blood testing devices never worked. Which is crazy but makes a certain kind of weird sense.

Maybe Trump will announce her pardon in the new Ballroom?
