When I was on sabbatical a few years ago, I returned to my working in coffee shop ways...but learned that the only way I can do it was to be there in the morning right as they opened so that: it was quiet, no one else was there, I could drink my one allotted cup of caffeinated coffee and be done.

Probably not surprising to anyone that the constant bashing of public sector workers (and let's include teachers in that) leads to chronic low morale....

The absolute bare minimum should be that the leaders of the public workforce stand up for those doing these essential jobs.

maybe he just woke up and decided to choose chaos? Makes as much sense as anything else.

And then...a 75mi radius of what point, exactly? The capitol? The office building? Not all agencies are in the capitol complex. What about MDE over in NE minneapolis? or DOC in the Energy Park area?

Neighbors in Rochester with same jobs could have different rules.

I was curious this AM and mapping distances...and I guess I would have to see the actual workplace rule / policy on this, because that 75mi distance is wildly subjective. Is it...as the crow flies? Actual driving distance? It matters, because Rochester seems veeeery close to that 75mi radius.

This resonates. Somewhere along the way this online behavior became the norm in irl spaces as well (at least in my area). I think the tipping point for me was the recent graduate of an expensive private college shaming an elderly neighbor of mine for (gently) challenging her support of vouchers.

Same. Except, 1000 feels a bit low.

That there are many places outside of academia where important, transformational, and purposeful work occurs.

Agree on the exploitation of groups. That said, I have found it helpful when restaurant owners publicly complain about having to treat their workers fairly, saying the quiet part out loud. It helps narrow the options of where to go out for food.

(ofc, pick your favorite chart on this one...there are several to choose from that all tell a similar story)

IDK. Seems like we keep having these conversations about most people not being able to afford something when there might just be another conversation we're avoiding.

Seconding what others have said about base layers. I hate hate hate how well those expensive smartwool base layers work. I have zero excuses for not exercising outdoors because of them.

And that’s a wrap for day one! Into the fridge for final proofing before baking tomorrow.

After some resting, some bulk fermentation, some folding, we’ve made it to a short bench rest, the last stop before final shaping and proofing.

Then again, I do have a google sheet for bread (I mean, who doesn't??)

(you know I am just a hobbyist because I did not say "build some bread")

It is going super great! Like you, I had ~20 years in a different area (academia/academic labor mvmt), so it has been an adjustment to be newer to something.

And, quite honestly, for me that has been the biggest challenge. I am looking ahead to my 6 month mark and how settled I know I will feel.
