Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is back in the news. Before booking flights, there are 3 questions we need to ask:

1. Is it actually effective at reducing emissions?

2. If it IS effective, where/how should we produce it?

3. If 1 and 2 are sorted, are they enough to offset increases in air travel?

Great to contribute to @nowthenmag.bsky.social investigation into if Doncaster Sheffield Airport should reopen.

(it shouldn't, cos of many, many reasons)

Thing that most amazes me about these stats is the fact they are so out of date. 2022 stats at the end of 2024? C'mon DfT. You can do better than that.
New DfT transport & environment data shows that in 2022 domestic transport accounted for 28% of total domestic emissions in the UK, up 2% on 2021. Cars and taxis account for the bulk of those emissions.

It's lower than 2019 but going the wrong way and well off track for 2030 committments.

Ayayayyy what a week for EVs

News of the Stellantis Luton factory closure has been conflated with the ZEV mandate failing, but it's pretty clear to anyone paying attention that the two things are not really related...

2 big things to note on this:

It's extremely disappointing to see continued doubt cast on the UK's ZEV mandate - one of our biggest carbon saving measures to date.

Weakening the regulation would put UK's climate goals at risk & the ability for the UK to keep drawing in affordable EV models.
