With 17 million adults reporting long COVID symptoms like brain fog and fatigue, the idea of viral persistence has gained traction. The researchers found that a quarter of COVID-infected people had SARS-CoV-2 antigens in their blood for up to 14 months after infection. The most common was spike. "A large body of work now supports that months or years after acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, evidence of persistent viral antigens -- spike and nucleocapsid -- and viral RNA are detected in various tissues in people, based on autopsy and biopsy studies," observed Akiko Iwasaki, PhD, of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.

CDC study says nearly 1 in 10 Tennesseans has suffered from 'long COVID' KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a new study Tennessee is among the seven states with the highest rate of people suffering from "long COVID." That study said nearly one in 10 Tennesseans suffers from it. "Doctors need to listen to the patients," said Dr. Wes Ely from Vanderbilt's Critical Illness, Brain Dysfunction and Survivorship Center. "There's not a specific test for long COVID." Ely said people can have mild cases of COVID and end up with long COVID. He said long COVID is classified as continuing symptoms in people for 12 weeks or longer. "You have impaired memory, visual-spatial function, how quickly your brain works, your ability to do lists at the grocery store," Ely said. "All of that can be impaired by long COVID."

In other words, COVID levels are still high and taking longer to go down after this winter's peak. Keep taking precautions.
