Biggest subsidy is the 30 year mortgage. It’s a loan no bank ever would write in large volumes. Much less with terms like fixed rates, fully amortizing, with little to no recourse. Undoing that is probably approaching “undo social security” levels of toxicity.

So, many of the hardcore participants experienced OWS more as a developmental moment/milestone rather than a movement in the traditional sense, and then radiated out into a wide universe of different things in ways that are still informed by those experiences.

I also think a key piece that was not explicit, but core to it, is that the foot soldiers were under- and un-employed Great Recession Millennials who had little to lose dropping out of their shitty temp jobs for a few months to express their rage while getting an organizing crash course.
