Most of my consulting work is in the "give me a thousand regressions please" - but not all! So I'd say that having a fair amount of complex modelling or visualization problems is a must.

Yes, I would say most data collection is done with some form of research question in mind.

I don't think clustering is bad, but I find it hard to imagine it as a goal in and of itself...
