I’m coming to the realization that I have one particular decision I have to make when it comes to the direction of my life:

For the #motocamping nerds, check out this slick abomination: a dairy crate that has been secured with stainless zip ties and hose clamps, that fits my old Duluth Trading AWOL bag so well I don’t need to secure it. It literally clicks into place. Can’t wait to load this baby up and go camping soon!

Lou, my 06 Tiger 955i, ran beautifully, like she was just waiting for me to hit the highway so she could stretch her legs. She’s still way faster than I am, and she’s got a whole additional 6th gear left at 75mph, even loaded down with my heavy ass and a compliment of luggage. So proud of her.

I did it. I rode my bike over 250 miles between Saturday and Sunday, going on my very first motorcycle trip. I thought I was going to hate going to work today but it turns out that eating up old highways and canyons, and blasting solo through the high desert is REALLY good for the ol’ mental health!

I desperately want ride w/ a group of hard leftist ADV riders that coordinate to “do good recklessly”. Fucking roll into town to fix potholes. Build a chicken coup for a neighbor. Maybe clean up the streets by cleaning up the streets? We help who we want and don’t give a FUCK. We’ll fix what we want

Whenever I come across an abandoned mirror on one of my walks, I take a picture in it and spend some time looking at myself. It always seems to feel like a “save point” along the way, like it’s an opportunity to breathe, look around, and continue on the adventure.

I’d like to document all this along the way. Maybe a YouTube channel and blog? I’d like to write some long form stuff and play with a drone. Vicky and her camera were always the plan, but this purpose feels nice. Showing places in need while we spend a week or two (or longer?) providing our labor.

So we’re going to learn to ride on all sorts of roads, in many different conditions, and ride to where we want to go, helping people along the way. We’re going to spend the next few years training, preparing, and putting together a plan.

We cannot adventure in a bubble and ignore the world’s problems completely. We need to do what we can along the way. Vicky suggested we seek out places to volunteer, and the idea of riding from place to place to be of service sounds like a dream my 14YO self would be very stoked about.

Adventuring has always been so important to us, even when we started dating as young teens. It seems, ifik, to be what life is for. Now that I’m 40, I’m more certain than ever that to live a life of travel snd adventure is, by itself, the highest act of rebellion. But naturally that’s not enough…

I had the most amazing impromptu evening with the wife last night. A shower, some amazing sex, and then sharing our hopes and dreams in a way that allows us to celebrate 25 years while thinking about the next 25. I can tell now that we both have our bikes, things are going to start shifting again.
