Steve Martin has had few years in his career as prolific as 1991 when he had starring roles in three releases: L.A. STORY, FATHER OF THE BRIDE and GRAND CANYON.

Charles Shyer & Nancy Myers work their magic in remaking the 1950 Spencer Tracy classic into a shamelessly sweet & sentimental update tailored to Martin's witty comic skillset. Even if it’s filled with fluff, there‘s a heartfelt warmth to the delivery that makes this one a true comfort movie for me.

I know this is a worn out argument at this point but my gripe is less that 4 was unnecessary and more that 3 was quite possibly the perfect way to end the series. It lands the plane on the whole story arc as smoothly as any series ever has while also ripping your heart out.

Kimberly Williams’s debut performance as Annie Banks in FATHER OF THE BRIDE (1991) was nominated for Best Breakthrough Performance at the 1992 MTV Movie Awards. Unfortunately Williams lost to Edward Furlong (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) in the category.

One of the things I love about FATHER OF THE BRIDE (1991) is that it gave us an all-time great Steve Martin meltdown.

They rereleased it in theaters in 1986 so it tracks. Still crazy to me that it was an active property for Disney up until Splash Mountain.

Just thinking about how a decade into the Touchstone Pictures filmography there had been four films featuring characters singing “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” from SONG OF THE SOUTH (1946).

Robert Benton’s middle of the pack 1930s mobster flick was a critical & commercial failure but in retrospect I think it deserves more credit. Hoffman brings gravitas to Dutch Schultz at the center of a powerhouse cast. Its not the best gangster movie but one that is definitely worth a reevaluation.
