I hear a lot of lamentation about the need to return to rote memorization in our classrooms. If rote memorization had worked, we wouldn't be where we are. Yes, our kids (and adults) need to know their math facts even today! However, there are better ways to learn them.
When PISA classified kids around the world by how they approached math, it turned out that those who relied on memorization (vs. deeper understanding or relations among concepts) were the lowest achievers in every country. And rote learning of math facts predominated in the US: tinyurl.com/2kfpkm7s
