#WritingAdvice from Isabel Allende:

“When you tell a story in the kitchen to a friend, it’s full of mistakes and repetitions. It’s good to avoid that in literature, but still, a story should feel like a conversation. It’s not a lecture.”

The #StoryGrid Commandments give writers an excellent toolkit for tightening scenes. It may not work for every author, and there are other scene models out there to check out. But I recommend looking at Story Grid – it contains lots of great ideas for writers. #writingadvice #writing #bookcoaching
One of the most important things I’ve learned from #StoryGrid was The 5 (or 6) Commandments of Storytelling. Keeps my scenes on track.
Every Scene Must Have:
1. Inciting Incident
2. Progressive Complication(s)
3. Turning Point Prog. Comp. ⬆️
4. Crisis
5. Climax
6. Resolution

"If the reader doesn't need to know something to solve the mystery and it's not a red herring, keep it to yourself." – Anne R. Allen

I can't fathom why I do this to myself, but I recently finished another of Adam Nevilsl #horror #books. The Reddening took me longer than The Ritual, because I took a break after the midpoint, which horrified me so much I couldn't continue. Doesn't sound like a recommendation. And yet it is.

The AI book list and general enshittification reminded me that I've been credited as blurbing hundreds of books I never have, including books by Patti Smith, Amy Tan, Sidney Sheldon, Joyce Maynard, and Elmore Leonard? And I can't get these fake blurbs taken off publisher and bookstore websites?

Case in point: Before I finally wrote my 1st novel, I owned 50+ books on #writing. Today, with 14 books published, I'm a bit closer to balancing things out. Dunno if that makes me so smart, tho. 😆 #writers

I've rediscovered my #music collection (digital and CD, no cassettes, unfortunately) and the joys of pre-streaming music. Listening to music in an app that doesn't try to push its content into my face. So delightful.
