Most reporting is just not up to the task of registering both that 1) the White House is *attacking* universities *as institutions* 2) the White House is working *with* universities’ boards to achieve *common goals* for remaking and weakening those institutions
Boards of Trustees ***LIKE*** the Trump demands. They ***AGREE*** with them.
They like the idea of putting the screws on activist, lefty, and Muslim students. They like the idea of a whiter student body and conservative curriculum. They want these things and think $200 million is a fair price.

The sad part is that I think they do know…and still…
Most incredible about this is that IU-Bloomington has long been the no. 1 university in the world for teaching Asian languages and cultures, with many programs found nowhere else.
They're slashing many of IU-B's most distinctive programs with zero thought or debate. They probably don't even know.

Bloodbath in Indiana higher ed as public colleges and universities ordered to eliminate 20% of all degree programs, apparently based purely on student demand (=enrollments) and not any rational calculation of need or value.

Congress needs to block this. This so incredibly detrimental to the health, welfare, and prosperity of the nation.
Exclusive: National Science Foundation staff were told today that the agency’s 37 divisions—across all eight directorates—are being abolished and the number of programs within those divisions will be drastically reduced.

Academic friends, if your NSF grants have been terminated by the administration, FABBS is hosting a webinar Friday about appealing the decisions. It's important that as many people appeal as possible to show we're not accepting this targeting of science. Link to the webinar registration is below.

We were at breakfast yesterday, seated outside, and we kept hearing this. It was very…odd.
“In one video… a voice claiming to be Zuckerberg says that “it’s normal to feel uncomfortable or even violated as we forcefully insert AI into every facet of your conscious experience. And I just want to assure you, you don’t need to worry because there’s absolutely nothing you can do to stop it.””
Silicon Valley crosswalk buttons apparently hacked to imitate Musk, Zuckerberg voices
Crosswalk buttons along the mid-Peninsula appear to have been hacked, so that when pressed, voices professing to be Mark Zuckerberg or Elon Musk begin speaking.

This is just sickening. Inhumane. Inhuman.
I want you to understand this is happening in our name and we know most of these men committed no crimes. One is a professional soccer player who was tortured in Venezuela and was working through asylum in the U.S. ICE shipped him for his Real Madrid tattoo and a picture throwing rock & roll horns.

Some higher ed organizations who are loudly circling the wagons against federal funding cuts were oddly silent or circumspect about the earlier attacks on CRT and DEI.
I wish there was a better understanding that these attacks are coming because we failed to repel those.

Ask how many proposals have been set aside- that the panel is not able to review or consider? How were those decisions made? Are there any currently convened panels that would refuse to consider the remainder until the rest of complete, timely-submitted proposals (no matter the topic) are included?
We absolutely should be refusing to review under these conditions. Ask questions when asked to review. Ask about what might have changed. Ask about broader impacts or whatever is relevant to what they want you to do. Make a fuss. Don't just say no, say why.
What can we, as academics, do about NSF & NIH that are now actively discriminating against important scientific research & scholars? My colleague, @lluaces.bsky.social, has a suggestion I really like: *don’t review for them*- at least this cycle while they are setting aside & censoring proposals.
