“I loved these books as a child [and do still] because they present America as a choice and not a choice you make just once. We aren’t the land of opportunity or a nation of immigrants or equal before the law just because we say we are. We become [and remain] those things only if we strive for them”

Fight fascism. Stand and be counted among the resistance on October 18.
The map for the next No Kings Day just went live. There are dozens of events on it now and we hope to add thousands soon. Let’s turn October 18 into the largest show of defiance against Trump’s regime yet: www.nokings.org?SQF_SOURCE=i...

“Woke” has never held a candle to the right’s fascist insistence on its cultural norms. “Not even something as low stakes as a company’s logo can escape the gaze of a president bent on changing — or forcing — American life to reflect his own views and tastes, which often mirror the far-right . . .”

This article tells the story. No National Guard presence in one of the highest crime neighborhoods in DC, but over at Union Station and National Mall they are out in force for photo ops. That said, I’m glad the guard aren’t in Ward 8, they might accidentally hurt innocent kids.
Residents in DC's high-crime areas say federal police surge has left them out
Many said they would like to see more MPD presence, as opposed to federal authorities and troops.

Trump, Claiming Weak Jobs Numbers Were ‘Rigged,’ Fires Labor Official

Fascism in plain sight. Now he will look for a toady to cook the books. I deal with data like this all the time in my work. If we can’t rely on it to be accurate — it is bad, bad, bad.

Sick humor, but it strikes close to the truth. How can the Israeli government commit genocide given the historic experience of its citizens, many of whom are also objecting loudly? A strong military response to the October 7 attacks was justified, this outrage is not.

This pretty much says it all about the mindless place our society has reached, especially when it comes to doing something about guns and their prevalence in mass shootings, street violence, murders of abused women, and accidental death of children.

Tragedies like this are heart-wrenching and a terrible price for to pay for the public to learn that government agencies really do do important work. It’s the same kind of story with the resurgence of black lung in coal country. Needless deaths thanks partially to the arrogance of rich blowhards.
