These senators are demonstrating a willful blindness that has become endemic in the Democratic Party. Their rhetoric — and the conventional wisdom that flows from it — suggests that we cannot talk about economic solutions without abandoning our commitment to the Black, Latino, gay, transgender and female poor that are the lifeblood of the Democratic Party’s base. The conceit at the heart of that belief is that poor white people are too racist, and too uniquely ignorant of their racism, to vote in their best interests. Therefore, Democrats have to accept a little racism to win the working class. It is an old argument. History will tell you that negotiating with racism or fascism or authoritarianism never ends well.

Mayors and Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives have said the USDA should use $5 billion in contingency funds to partially fund November benefits. The memo said the agency will not draw on the funds because they are "not legally available" to cover the benefits and will reserve them for responding to natural disasters and other emergencies. "SNAP contingency funds are only available to supplement regular monthly benefits when amounts have been appropriated for, but are insufficient to cover, benefits. The contingency fund is not available to support FY 2026 regular benefits, because the appropriation for regular benefits no longer exists," said the memo.

Apparently, it’s fine to buy political influence if you can afford it, but for Timothy, when Black Americans vote for candidates that support popular social programs, that’s “slavery redux.” Timothy included other such racist musings in his self-published autobiography. “For delivering their votes in the Federal Elections, they [Black Americans] are awarded with yet more and more freebies: food stamps, cell phones, WIC payments, Obamacare, and on, and on, and on,” Timothy wrote. “The largess is funded by the hardworking folks, fewer and fewer in number, who are too honest or too proud to allow themselves to sink into this morass.”

The Marine Corps has long faced scrutiny over Scout Snipers’ use of SS-style insignia — a practice denounced by military officials and Jewish civil rights groups after photos emerged in 2012 showing Marines in Afghanistan posing with an SS flag. The Schutzstaffel or “SS” was a paramilitary organization under Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party responsible for many of the regime’s war crimes and atrocities during World War II. In 2012, the then Marine Corps Commandant, Gen. James Amos, apologized to “all offended by this regrettable incident,” adding, “I want to be clear that the Marine Corps unequivocally does not condone the use of any such symbols to represent our units or Marines.” Platner in the Reddit threads repeatedly argued that some US military members used the symbols in a different way and not to reference the Nazi units.

On this particular discussion: Kind of intrigued that all of you favored federal funding for public broadcasting. I did too, once, but as our nation has become more and more hyper political I’ve becoming personally convinced that political balance is important for any news gathering organization. That balance did exist once. It doesn’t anymore. Below is a story which a former NPR editor, Uri Berliner, wrote for the Free Press. Berliner also looked at voter registration records for NPR’s news staff in Washington DC. There were 87 registered Democrats and 0 registered Republicans in the news room. That’s a problem. If a newsroom has 100% belonging to one political party and 0% to the other, it’s impossible to make an argument that there won’t be significant bias in its news coverage, IMHO. Here’s a story written by a former NPR editor which explains what he observed over time. An excerpt: Back in 2011, although NPR’s audience tilted a bit to the left, it still bore a resemblance to America at large. Twenty-six percent of listeners described themselves as conservative, 23 percent as middle of the road, and 37 percent as liberal. By 2023, the picture was completely different: only 11 percent described themselves as very or somewhat conservative, 21 percent as middle of the road, and 67 percent of listeners said they were very or somewhat liberal. We weren’t just losing conservatives; we were also losing moderates and traditional liberals. An open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR, and now, predictably, we don’t have an audience that reflects America. That wouldn’t be a problem for an openly polemical news outlet serving a niche audience. But for NPR, which purports to consider all things, it’s devastating both for its journalism and its business model.
