Here's a little about me.

1) I believe in science, vaccines, and modern medicine
2) I make fun of homeopathy/quackery
3) I despise Trump, and want the J6 insurrections punished
4) I stand with Israel and Ukraine.
5) I'm a Catholic along the lines of Dorothy Day. I respect all faiths and atheists
I never expected the United States to fall so quickly.

I like to think of them less as panic attacks and more as anxiety snuggles.

Every time a new iPhone comes out, Apple is all, "Fam, this time we're really serious. With our new Nuclear Pixie Dust Glass and HyperUnubtanium frame, you super duper don't need a case!"

It's like they have a vested interest in us dropping and having to replace a $1,000 dollar pocket computer.

one thing i keep thinking about is how there is simply no way to design a constitutional system that can resist authoritarian incursion if participants in that system do not actually care that much

I have a pretty high tolerance for 19th century British novels, but Tom Jones, a Foundling has defeated me.
If it can be said in 20 words, Fielding is content to use 3,000. To avoid obscure references, he instead resorts to the opaque and arcane. The plot is harder to follow than the Kabbala.

I read a lot of fiction, and a lot of it is dystopian. The silly, over-the-top, trying-way-too-hard authoritarian nomenclature in those stories has always struck me as the most metaphorical, least realistic thing about those novels.

I would like to rescind my opinion in light of current events.

with the LA fire apocalypse going on, important to remember what our mayor and city council thought it was more important to spend money on than fire prevention: cops to beat you!

Depression is:

NOT a failing, weakness, or a sin.
IS treatable, and you can get better.
DON'T believe the grifters who tell you to "just go to the gym" or "you need to take my supplements".
TALK to a trustworthy medical professional, NOT an influencer on the internet.

You can and will get better.

A question for Filipinos: Why do you accept poor service and products?

A car dealership who never answers their phone. Nice restaurants where the food comes out cold. Why do you not politely complain and insist on being treated well? I love my adopted country, but I'm puzzled by this aspect.

Me: "Doctor, I told my wife that the next time I get sick, she should bring me to the veterinarian instead of to the hospital."

My doctor: "Paul, if I was a vet, I'd recommend to her you should be put down and that she should check shelters for another husband."

Those of you who have read "It Can't Happen Here" by Sinclair Lewis, your opinion, please? I read it in grade school and honestly remember little about it. I think I'm going to add it to the To Read pile.

Say something nice about yourself:

"Other than for an emergency ambulance call when I was on duty, I have never knowingly crossed a picket line."

I pressed the wrong button on the Samsung TV remote and summoned Bixby. Does anyone actually use that horrid assistant? Getting it to go away was like trying to cast out a demon that was accidentally summoned.

Looking for suggestions for a book to read. Something on the deconstruction of post-modern, anti-colonialism thought in theater, with an emphasis on the struggle of those with left-handed ideations.

Nothing too mainstream or popular, please. Fair trade only.

If the Philippines has taught me anything, it's that there is almost nothing that can't be transported by motorcycle.

Bluesky has better data security than my bank. No matter what I post on here, the odds of anyone seeing it are close to zero.

George Washington required smallpox inoculations for his troops during the American Revolutionary War. Fucking George Washington knew this, how can RFK not?

I think Thanksgiving in the US must be infectious agent's favorite holiday. Between air travel, family gatherings, and food left out overnight, it's the perfect event.

Always thought I’d die in battle, defending freedom and the rule of law. These days, COPD and decubitus are looking more likely.
