@osma @tml BTW Athelstan Spilhaus was an immigrant, for those who observe. His family tree looks as wild as his map.

@osma @tml I met Fred Spilhaus, Athelstan's son and CEO de-facto for life of AGU, many times at geophysical meets. AGU produced a jigsaw 'the Puzzle of the Plates' depicting plate tectonics. I still have it somewhere...

This is a really good thread from @katearonoff.bsky.social explaining why US oil majors aren't super excited about this prospect but I reckon there is precedent for the conditions for excitement to emerge, given the industry's history of winning subsidies for inefficiency (see......everything?)
The US produces >13 mn barrels of oil per day. Venezuela produces <1 million bpd

There's a global oil glut i.e. lower prices. That's bad for US producers, who need higher prices to break even. Hard to imagine they're eager to make big new investments in an unstable place w/ decrepit infrastructure

@osma @tml Well, Mercator *can* be bad, if it is taken as a representation of real size. Like, Greenland isn't really the same size as Africa. Also a bad idea to make it the default for classroom wall maps. It's really only good for navigation by compass.

And yes, it exaggerates the size of […]

I mean - this includes a quote from a Texan oil consultant explicitly stating “very soon" and other sources saying "we'll do it if you pay us". It isn't "fuck off", it's "subsidise us enough and we'll do it", stated clearly several times. Reading comprehension is important

You understand that terms of office expire, yes?

There is no "staying in office"; the office ends. If there is no one duly elected to replace you, the office is vacant. You don't get to keep it.

Not really. They could just stay in office, bog them down in lawsuits, etc. and grind governance to a halt.
